Respecting your privacy

LEAF is committed to respecting the privacy of our supporters, their families and our employees by adhering to the privacy principles set forth in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

Personal information includes any factual or subjective information, recorded or not, about an identifiable individual. This includes any information in any form, such as:

  • age, name, ID numbers, income, ethnic origin, or blood type;
  • opinions, evaluations, comments, social status, or disciplinary actions and employee files, credit records, loan records, medical records, existence of a dispute between a consumer and a merchant, intentions (for example, to acquire goods or services, or change jobs)
  • personal information does not include the name, title, or business address or telephone number of an employee of an organization.


LEAF is responsible for all personal information under our control. Our Manager of Marketing and Communications has been designated as Chief Privacy Officer and is accountable for compliance with this statement and is responsible for the management of the statement. Before or when any personal information is collected, LEAF, or those designated or contracted to act on our behalf, will identify why it is needed and how it will be used. We will inform you of any new purpose for this information and obtain your consent before using it.

All supporters and participants have the ability to consent to the use of their personal information.  LEAF makes a reasonable effort to ensure that individuals are advised of the purposes for which information will be used.  LEAF attempts to get written consent from program participants when reasonable (e.g. application forms), though will assume consent is given unless informed otherwise. We hate spam as much as you do and will never provide your email address to third party mailing lists, or send spam to you ourselves.  We use Mollom a web service that helps moderate our site's content and avoid getting spammed as well.  You can visit their website for more information on their privacy policy.

LEAF will limit the collection of personal information to the purposes we have identified to you. We will not collect data indiscriminately and will limit this collection to what is necessary for the identified purpose.

LEAF’s website may collect aggregate information on visitor access and use in order to improve site functionality and ease of use for the user. LEAF uses industry-standard encryption technologies in the transference of personal information on our website.

LEAF will use or disclose personal information only for the purpose for which it was collected, unless you consent, or the use or disclosure is authorized under the Act. We will keep personal information only for as long as necessary to satisfy the stated purposes.

Personal information will be as accurate, complete and up-to-date as is necessary for the purposes for which it is used.

LEAF will take all reasonable measures to protect your personal information against loss or theft. We will safeguard your information from unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use or modification and we will protect your personal information regardless of the format in which it is held.
