Back in April of this year, on a sunny Saturday, a group of gardeners gathered in an urban herb farm in downtown Toronto. Together we built garden beds and sowed seeds. Following the afternoon of work in the spring sun, we shared food and stories. And as we sat together, we watched the first worker bee of the season for Sage Rising Herbs and reminisced about how we started this business only a year ago.

It was a beautiful sunny evening in Christie Pits and more than fifty curious tree-lovers gathered in the park, ready for a guided tour and some freshly-baked pizza. With the help of our trusty LEAF volunteers Katy and Taylor to check in participants, we kicked off the tour right on time! Jode Roberts of the David Suzuki Foundation took a moment to explain how Christie Pits is a key component of the Homegrown National Park project which aims to engage residents, businesses and institutions in crowd-sourcing a green corridor through the heart of Canada’s largest city.

OPG’s Biodiversity Program partners with organizations working to improve and protect biodiversity across Ontario including groups like LEAF, the Toronto Wildlife Centre and Earth Rangers.

But what you may not know is how the fight is going. Through June we ramped up our efforts, going door-to-door in carefully selected areas. We’ve held training sessions across Toronto and York Region. We’ve had media coverage and outreach events. And today we're asking you to help us share a new video for the #WatchYourAsh campaign.

Toronto Hydro has had a long-time commitment to our urban tree canopy and I enjoy being part of a team dedicated to making this city greener! I’ve been with Toronto Hydro for 14 years and I’m thrilled about our continuous support of LEAF and the great work they do. On top of the annual tree planting that our employees take part in with LEAF’s support, we sponsor the Leslieville Tree Festival which I was involved with again this year.

As a 10-time rider, Stihl Tour des Trees has taken me through several Canadian provinces and dozens of American states, and is one of the biggest urban forest fundraisers in the world. This annual 500 km cycling arbor-pilgrimage is always in a different location and raises money for the TREE Research and Education Endowment Fund.

On May 17, 2013, Justice J. Patrick Moore ruled that neighbours on Humewood Drive in Toronto shared ownership of a tree that was growing on the property line. One neighbour had been granted a tree removal permit by the City of Toronto, but without the consent of the other neighbour, they are not able to remove the tree because under provincial law, it is common property.

The sun shines brightly on me where I sit cross-legged on my couch, studying forest environments from my laptop. I am working on three large papers and trying to come to terms with what it means to seek an understanding of a forest from inside an urban concrete labyrinth. One of my papers focuses on how green infrastructure (trees, specifically) can alleviate stress on our sewer system as the city grows.
