The sun emerged just in time for our tour of Cabbagetown’s historic tree canopy last weekend. This was to be the first activity of the newly reformed Don Vale Cabbagetown Residents Association (DVRCA) and our Canopy Committee sponsored a tree tour by led by LEAF’s Amanda Gomm.

We were pleased to see a large group of more than 50 show up to attend, many of whom were local residents.  Several people mentioned living the area for years but never noticing some of the trees that Amanda pointed out.

That's what made the tour so special - taking a moment to admire our local canopy and appreciate the unique quality that mature trees bring to Cabbagetown.  Amanda showed us a whole new way to look at the neighbourhood, with new landmarks to appreciate (the Lindens on Metcalfe St., the Siberian Elm in Wellesley Park, the Horse Chestnuts on Sumach St.).

We came away from the tour with vital information about the stresses endured by urban trees and the importance of succession planning as trees age (mimicing what happens naturally in an untouched forest by planting smaller trees next to larger ones so they can take over when the mature tree starts to die).  These are some of the areas we'd like to focus on over the next few years.  In particular, we hope to encourage the care of existing trees and planting of new ones by local residents.

Another reason for hosting the tour was to get people interested in the Canopy Committee - and we did just that!  Several attendees have since joined the committee and we'll benefit by having LEAF mentor us as we work to raise awareness of important canopy issues in the neighbourhood. Specifically, we'll be looking to brainstorm new ideas, establish obtainable goals and network with similar committees across the city.  If you live in the area get in touch and get involved - and if you're outside of Cabbagetown, why not consider starting a committee in your own neighbourhood?
