About the Initiative

LEAF has launched a new tree planting and community engagement initiative in partnership with Durham Region, Housing Durham and Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation (DRNPHC). This initiative will bring native trees and shrubs to social housing communities across Oshawa and Whitby while supporting long-term stewardship. Together with residents and housing staff, we will co-design planting plans that reflect each site’s unique needs, priorities and green space goals.

By combining planting with community building, this project supports healthier neighbourhoods today and a more resilient urban forest for the future.

Connecting Residents with Trees

Trees are essential urban infrastructure. They cool neighbourhoods, improve air quality, manage stormwater and support mental and physical well-being. Yet access to these benefits is not always equitable. This initiative focuses on increasing canopy where it is needed most, while ensuring residents play a central role in shaping and caring for their outdoor spaces.

Residents will be invited to participate in engagement meetings, review planting plans, and join site-based Tree Care Teams. LEAF will provide training, tools, and ongoing support to help ensure the trees thrive for years to come.
