Coming into focus

Why are we giving tickets away? To understand our environment we need to read beyond the pages of a single book, newspaper or film screen. The Aggregate of Surrounding Things relates to all five senses; our grasp of it is enriched by time, good conversations and, of course, really great documentaries. To prove this, we are co-presenting a special screening for #PIF2012 at 4 p.m. this Sunday, October 14 and we want you to join us.

Crown of Life and Eyes in the Forest: The Portraiture of Jim Lawrence are two short films that will screen with Richard Boyce’s documentary Rainforest: The Limit of Splendour. The three filmmakers use poetry, photography, and song respectively as the tools through which larger themes can be first experienced and then explored.

I’m looking forward to hearing Boyce - who will be in attendance - speak to his film’s use of the intimate and uncomfortable as he glances into the face of questionable logging practices. How did he find his voice when approaching an issue so large that it threatens one of the most beautiful and ancient places in the world: Vancouver Island’s old growth forest?

While these decidedly non-urban subjects may seem an odd choice for an urban forest organization, the films present a unique opportunity for us city-slick tree huggers to step outside our norms. Free from glass towers and steel beams, these distant places still feel the weight of our footprints - even when we sometimes forget it. And that’s why we jumped at the opportunity to support a festival that brings it all back into view.

Between screenings on Saturday, October 13 you can drop by Patagonia (500 King St. West) from noon to 3:30 p.m. and catch some of our finest volunteers discussing all things environmental and giving away swag from LEAF and Patagonia. For a shot to win, you just have to tell one our volunteers that you love the urban forest and you’ll be entered in the draw. It’s that easy! See, I told you we love you guys.

Tickets for the screening and all other screenings can be purchased through Planet in Focus website or at the TIFF Bell Lightbox box office (350 King St. W).
