I think shrubs are the bees’ knees, and bees do too! That’s why we’ve decided to create ‘shruBEE’ bundles – a kit of four shrubs selected to maximize benefits for native bees.

In my blog post last week, I talked to Lillian, a Tree Tenders graduate, to find out what she’s been up to since taking the course with us last year. This week, I catch up with Sammy, a fourth year student in Ryerson University’s Environment and Urban Sustainability program, to see how she’s been using her tree knowledge lately!

As the fall sessions of our Tree Tenders Volunteering Training Program approach, I started wondering about our graduates from last year -- what have they have been up to and are they still connected with trees? Local residents, business owners, City of Toronto Staff and LEAF staff and volunteers met last Thursday, July 21st at Susan Tibaldi Parkette for a tree tour that celebrated the new Adopt-A-Street-Tree project in the Bloordale community. The project encourages community members to become active in caring for the street trees that were planted on Bloor Street by the City of Toronto in 2014. By the end of the tour, the program gained several new street tree adopters- fascinated by what they learned and ready to care for some trees!

Last Wednesday, LEAF led a tree tour to celebrate the Adopt-a-Street Tree project on the Danforth. Community members, City representatives, and LEAF staff and volunteers came out to find out more about the Danforth trees, and how they can care for them. By the evening’s end, not only had everyone learned more about their neighbourhood trees, but several new adopters had also joined the project! We’re excited for the prospects of these trees, with such a caring community to look after them.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: we wouldn’t be where we are today, or be able to do all that we do, without our amazing volunteers and supporters! As LEAF celebrated its 20th birthday, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to thank the many people who make LEAF great by hosting a summer party in our Learning Garden.

This spring, I had the honour of meeting Jacqui, a two-time LEAF tree owner. Both of Jacqui’s trees have such sentimental meaning that I wanted to share her story with you!
