Six beautiful maple trees have stood tall in front of the Lambton Park Community School for 97 years. On the 100th anniversary of the school, these trees were recognized as heritage trees through Forests Ontario’s Heritage Tree Program, highlighting their importance in the history of our nation, as well as the local Lambton Park community.

The St. Clair Urban Forest Demonstration Garden was to put to bed for the winter in late October. There were a number changes at this garden in 2016, mostly as a result of the St. Clair streetcar line repairs.

October 13th was gorgeous a fall day and an inspiring event with students and teachers from Kettle Lakes Public School, who helped us plant 300 trees and shrubs in Grovewood Park, Richmond Hill.

On Saturday, September 24th, LEAF staff, volunteers and partners were joined by over 40 residents in Machell Park, Aurora, where together we planted 300 native trees and shrubs. It was a beautiful autumn day and everyone had a fantastic time!

The Christie Pits Adopt-a-Park-Tree (AAPT) program launched on Sunday, September 11th, 2016. Preparation for this event began months ago, in May. Five Young Urban Forest Leaders -- Fletcher, myself (Lucy), Kristina, Meredith, and Monica -- were committed to becoming the best tree whisperers the park would ever see. Our end goal was to engage with the community and ensure that Christie Pits’ park trees would be well cared for in the years to come!

On Tuesday, August 9th, LEAF was joined by key influencers from across the GTA at High Park for a wild, native bee tour lead by Dr. Scott MacIvor. Dr. MacIvor, a an expert bee researcher at both University of Toronto and York University, shared his knowledge about bee species and their habitats- and even showed us different species buzzing around the park! We were joined by leaders like Toronto City Councillor Sarah Doucette and are hoping that with the help of all the individuals we had the pleasure of spending the morning with, we can help save our native bees!

Inspired by the Let It Bee presentation hosted by LEAF this past May, I registered for the Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count, picked up my camera and Bees of Toronto guide, and set out to learn more about native bees. I have been richly rewarded for my efforts, seeing bumble bees, carpenter bees, leaf cutter bees, metallic sweat bees, and many more. Here are three lessons I learned from my summer spent watching bees.

Our Adopt-a-Park-Tree journey began almost four months ago when we three ladies, all participants in LEAF’s Young Urban Forest Leaders Program met and joined forces to pursue one simple goal: to find loving adoptee parents for the beautiful trees at Chester Le Park. That journey came to its glorious head on Sunday August 21st.
