As the leaves turn and reach their end, so too must I. A little melodramatic? Perhaps. I was one of LEAF's Residential Planting Program Assistants for the past eight months, but now it is time for me to move on. As a way of saying adieu, I want to share a little bit about my experience with LEAF this year.

First, let me start by saying I highly, HIGHLY recommend working with LEAF if you get a chance - either as a volunteer or as an employee (or if you are super lucky like me, both). During my time with LEAF, I learned an incredible amount and met a bunch of other people just as nerdy about trees as I am!

I learned all about native trees and the importance of planting them in Toronto and York Region, and about the impact invasive species like the Emerald Ash Borer on our urban forests. I learned how to plant trees and shrubs and got to go out into the field and plant them with my own two office-work-experience-only hands! It was awesome! To be able to plant trees that you know will grow to their fullest potential because they were planted in the right place and will receive proper care is nothing short of amazing. I, and the homeowners that participated in LEAF's planting programs, made a difference and I'm so thankful to have been a part of it.

If you called into the LEAF office, chances are you spoke to me. Being responsible for LEAF’s main phone line was one of my favorite things about the job (next to being Barkley, the LEAF mascot). It warms my heart to know how many people are out there that care about our urban forest and are concerned about the trees in their neighborhoods. I got asked a lot of questions and got to learn along with you, so thank you!

I was the one to call people and let them know what day we would plant their tree and some of the reactions I will remember forever: Happy squeals and singing. It was so fantastic hear how excited people are to welcome their new trees home.

The other great part about working with LEAF was my co-workers. They know their stuff, that's for sure, and their dedication and hard work for the urban forest is something I will be forever thankful for. It was a pleasure working with such experts!

Also, did I mention I got to dress up like a tree and high-five children?! That was pretty darn neat too!

Barkley!

I may no longer be an official LEAF employee, but they certainly won't get rid of me that easily. I plan to continue my volunteer work with LEAF well into the future and can't wait to get back at it.

Thank you to everyone who made the last 8 month such an absolute joy!
