With energy bills high across the board – due to this lingering winter and its record lows - you may want to consider planting strategically to save yourself some money. You’ll be happy to know our list of native trees is growing – we’re introducing five new species that will add to the beauty and biodiversity of your yard and our urban forest. Those in search of a fast-growing shade tree that will also attract a variety of wildlife may want to check out the American elm (Ulmus americana). Drawn to a spectrum of showy fall colours? Then you’ll fall in love with the black gum (Nyssa sylvatica)'s autumn range, a rainbow of yellows, oranges, bright reds and purples.

For impatient privacy seekers, hide your yard from nosy neighbours with the trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), which establishes faster than most other trees in a thicket! The sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), or what I like to call the spa tree, is known for its grey-brown patchy bark that exfoliates to expose a creamy white inner bark - so it’s always changing looks. If you’re a leaf person, the Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra)’s palmate compound leaves may pique your interest. Want to learn more about these and other trees? Check out our species list and find the one that’s right for you.

Whatever your preference may be, it is important to keep in mind soil type and the amount of sunlight your yard receives so as to choose a species that will not only fulfill your objectives but also flourish in your yard for years to come. This is where I come in. So sign up for the Backyard Tree Planting Program and let me help you get your new tree, shrub or Garden Kit this spring!
