Endangered animals are a big problem in the world. One of the endangered animals is the Barn owl. Barn owls are located in Southern Ontario. They are endangered because people are tearing down the old traditional barns and replacing them with new “bird proof” barns. Now these owls are losing suitable nesting sites and it affects their survival. This is a shame because with the old generation of barns, Barn owls actually helped farmers control the population of rats and mice in a natural way.

Road mortality is another issue for Barn owls. Some owls prefer to fly close to the road at night, because it helps them hunt for their prey. In conclusion, Barn owls were a very important way of farm life, but still could be to this day. We all need to find a way to include them in our environment and not eliminate them from our world.

Trees are a very important part of our ecosystem. Without trees we would not be able to breathe because they provide the oxygen to breathe and live. There are many reasons why trees are important, but we are going to talk about one. For us, the most important reason is the oxygen that they produce and provide for the world. If there were no trees, our breathable environment would be at risk. A mature tree produces as much oxygen as ten people could inhale in a year. People do not realize that forests are like giant filters that clean the air. In conclusion, trees are a big part of our world.

Brenna and Emma are two grade 5 students who contacted LEAF about planting a Serviceberry tree in their ravine for the birds to eat them during the winter. They were doing a project about endangered animals and learned that planting trees is good for the environment. We were thrilled when they agreed to share their passion about endangered species and trees on the LEAF Blog!
