Abayomi Broomes is an advocate and activist dedicated to the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife. Since 2022, he has received over 15 native shrubs and three native trees through LEAF’s Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) Planting and Stewardship Program. Hear more from Abayomi about the importance of community greening and why others should get involved.

Abayomi has been an active participant in planting and caring for native trees and shrubs on his property. He has gone a step further this year by completing the Tree Tenders Training Course, gaining 15 hours of training in tree biology, identification, care and maintenance and so much more!

Community Housing Stewardship Assistant, Moesha Dominique, had the pleasure of interviewing Abayomi about his thoughts and experiences in the TCHC Planting and Stewardship Program.

What interested you in planting trees at your property?

“I have been planting trees since elementary school, and since that time I told myself that if I get the opportunity to plant trees, I will take it every time. Before I heard of LEAF, I got trees from the city and planted them in my neighbourhood. They are still growing today.”

What has been the most meaningful aspect of the program for you?

“The most meaningful aspect of the program is that I have the opportunity to help the preservation of plants that are edible for both humans and animals. With the climate the world is in, we need programs like LEAF if we are meant to survive.”

What would you say to the other TCHC tenants to inspire them to get involved?

“I would say to them that if you have a passion for plants then this program is for you. There are many challenges when it comes to growing plants and these challenges come in from many directions, whether internal or external. You must appreciate the environment, especially with the price of food going up. Planting edible plants is key; plus, the best food is food you grow yourself.”

Thank you, Abayomi for your love and support for the environment and your community. We at LEAF appreciate your passion for the preservation of natural resources and for your dedication to the TCHC Plantings and Stewardship Program!

For seven years, LEAF has been working with TCHC and the City of Toronto to engage with residents in the planting and stewardship of native trees and shrubs on TCHC properties. LEAF’s TCHC Planting and Stewardship Program aims to provide communities with the knowledge and support to properly care for the trees in their communities and deepen their relationships with nature.

Moesha Dominique is the Community Housing Stewardship Assistant at LEAF.

The TCHC Planting and Stewardship Program is implemented by LEAF, TCHC and the City of Toronto. It is funded by the Ciry of Toronto through an Urban Forestry Grant and Green Communities Canada through the Living Cities Canada Fund, which is funded by the Echo Foundation.
