When it comes to the issue of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), much of the media coverage has focused on gloom, doom and the sound of chainsaws. I can’t say I blame them. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotion; but there is more to the story, and it includes optimism, the power of community, and you. It is our EAB Call to Action.

This Saturday, we are gathering community leaders, LEAF volunteers and concerned individuals to get up off their chairs and into the streets taking tangible steps against the effects of EAB. Let’s help rewrite the story of how this pest will affect our city.

We’re making action easy. LEAF has come up with five options you can take to help inform your community about ash tree injections, succession planting and the importance of BIODIVERSITY. As an EAB Ambassador you can:

1. Share this issue on social media

2. Drop our EAB information postcards in your neighbours’ mailboxes (you could choose to do 5, 25 or 50 houses if you like…but keep it manageable)

3. Share information on EAB at a meeting in your community (like a Resident’s or Ratepayers’ Association)

4. Use our EAB Action Kit to help residents in your community to organize injection treatments and replanting efforts

5. Be a rockstar and take on all of the above

This call to action is not a spectator sport. The EAB issue is far too important to sit back and wait for someone else to step in. This goes beyond my regular position - I’m volunteering my time because I believe, if we have enough individuals covering the city, we can use this as an opportunity to work together and build the healthy urban forest we need.

We’ve faced similar challenges in the past - like Dutch Elm Disease - but if we learn from our history and invest in our urban forest’s future, we can make this city green and lush for generations. More than half of Toronto's urban forest is found on private property, so it is crucial that we all get involved. The more hands on deck, the greater our collective impact.

Sign up for our EAB Ambassador Launch and Training this Saturday or if you can’t make the training, sign up online and we’ll send you everything you need to get started.

Now is not the time to lose hope, it’s the time to get active!
