Schomberg Farm Growing More Than Produce!

On the morning of Saturday, September 15th community members from the King area joined LEAF, the Township of King and the Reginal Municipality of York for a public tree planting event! Even though it was a hot, balmy day, energy levels were high and everyone’s excitement could be seen as tree after tree went into the ground.

The location was the beautiful Schomberg Community Farm. Nestled within the Township of King, the farm sits on a 6-acre property in central Schomberg Village.  The farm was established in 2013 with the vision of a community hub where members can enjoy gardening, growing their own food and getting involved in their community. Now, to add to this list, the farm will also contribute to the Township of King’s growing green infrastructure with the addition of 50 new native trees and 100 native shrubs; all planted in the naturalized area across the creek that runs through the property.

The public event started at 10:00 AM, but LEAF staff and volunteers were there hours earlier to prepare. Everyone worked hard to get the equipment and site ready for the event. Once community members arrived, LEAF demonstrated how to properly plant and mulch the new plants and it was time to get planting!

We hope everyone had as much fun as we did! We want to give a special thank you to our experienced and energetic LEAF volunteers who were indispensable at this event. From planting demonstrations to keeping everyone hydrated, they went above and beyond on such a hot and humid day!
