What inspired you to join the LEAF Board of Directors?

I am deeply passionate about urban sustainability and the critical role that urban forests play in climate resilience, biodiversity and community well-being. I’ve always been an advocate for engaging diverse communities in sustainability initiatives and am excited to support LEAF’s work in enhancing tree equity across neighbourhoods. This is also my first time serving on a board, so I’m eager to strengthen my expertise in governance and decision-making while learning from others who share the same commitment to environmental stewardship.

What experience do you bring to this role?

I have a background in environmental science and sustainability management, with experience in climate action planning, program development and community engagement. I currently lead initiatives that focus on empowering communities—particularly underserved groups—to engage in climate action, green careers and environmental justice. My work has involved cross-sector collaboration, strategic planning and public outreach, all of which I hope to bring to my role at LEAF to support its mission and impact.

What do you see as some of the most pressing issues facing urban forests?

One of the biggest challenges is the impact of climate change—rising temperatures, extreme weather events and shifting precipitation patterns threaten the health and longevity of urban trees. Additionally, urban development pressures and increasing sprawl contribute to canopy loss, disproportionately affecting lower-income and racialized communities. Ensuring tree equity, protecting mature trees and prioritizing resilient, diverse species in urban planning are essential for fostering more inclusive and sustainable urban forests. Expanding green infrastructure and advocating for stronger policies that protect and enhance our urban tree canopy will be key in addressing these challenges.

Are you involved in any other community initiatives?

Yes! At Skills for Change, I lead the Youth Climate Action Initiative (YCAI), a program designed to empower youth to be active drivers of sustainability in their communities. My focus is on creating accessible pathways for communities to participate in environmental solutions, ensuring that climate action is equitable and inclusive. Through my work, I aim to bridge gaps between environmental policy and community engagement, ensuring that diverse voices are included in shaping sustainable solutions.

We are thrilled to have Nya bring her passion, experience and leadership to the LEAF Board! Her dedication to environmental justice and urban forest conservation will help shape our work and strengthen our impact in the years ahead.
