I've spent the past few weeks working on a very exciting project – Maple Leaf Forever Design Competition and Exhibition. What’s that, you ask?

You might remember that the famous Maple Leaf Forever tree fell during the 2013 summer storm that hit Toronto. Thankfully the wood of this historic tree was kept and the city has been distributing pieces to artists and woodworkers for use in various commemorative projects.

LEAF is working in partnership with the City of Toronto, the Green Living Show and Ontario Wood to bring the next great project to fruition. We’re holding a design competition that will involve many generous designers contributing their time and talents to craft unique items that will be displayed and auctioned at this year’s Green Living Show, March 27 - 29. Proceeds will support LEAF’s urban forest initiatives.

Last week was the competition deadline and we received many great submissions from designers across the city. Now comes the hard part – choosing the winning ones! Fortunately, we have a great panel of judges, who I’m sure will do a fantastic job. Our esteemed panel includes:

  • Lubo Brezina (Brezina Designs),
  • Mark Cullen (Canada AM & Home Hardware Lawn & Garden),
  • Miles Keller (Dystil Design),
  • Shauna Levy (Design Exchange),
  • Shaun Moore (Made),
  • Tim Richards (South Street Boatbuilders).

Winning designs will be announced next week. We’ll also be sharing some of the designers’ stories in upcoming blogs. Stay tuned!
