Winter may seem like a slow time for trees, but we are certainly keeping busy at LEAF. Not feeling dismayed about another round of sub-zero wind chills, ninety people turned out for the Winter Tree ID Tour last weekend! Here is what we have going on this week….

Yesterday, Brenna, our fantastic Field Operations Coordinator, spoke with Humber College students about what it’s like to work in the field of arboriculture. These students are participants in Humber College’s Pre-Apprenticeship Arborist Program, so they were excited to learn about LEAF as they look ahead to careers in arboriculture!

Tonight, we’ll be at Lake Wilcox SNAP’s Eco-Landscaping Workshop Series. The workshop this week is on permeable pavement. Permeable pavement reduces stormwater runoff and helps trees get the water they need – what a great invention! We’ll also be offering pre-orders of our Native Garden Kits for delivery this spring. Come on by to learn about replacing your driveway with permeable pavement and to order a garden kit!

And on Friday, March 7, we’ll have a table at the University of Toronto’s Environmental Career Day. This event is a great chance for to University of Toronto students to find out about LEAF programs and volunteer opportunities. We’ll meet folks from The Environmental Students Union (ENSU), the Graduate Environmental Students Association (GESA), Toronto Undergraduate Geography Society (TUGS), and the Forestry Union of Students (FUS) and School of the Environment. Stop by our table in Hart House!

Lastly, LEAF will be at Evergreen Seedy Saturday on March 8. Gardeners of all kinds will come together to kick of the season by buying, selling and trading local seeds including vegetables, herbs, flowers and native species. Enjoy fun children's activities and local produce, and take part in our workshops on starting and caring for your garden and saving/harvesting your own seeds! This is a great opportunity to encourage people to plant native garden kits! Stop by our table at the Evergreen Brickworks between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
