(April 17, 2019 - Markham, ON) Are you looking to add more greenery or shade to your yard this summer? The City of Markham, in partnership with York Region, is offering an additional subsidy to Markham residents to save up to $400 per tree when they plant through Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).

This initiative, endorsed by Markham's Trees for Tomorrow program, will contribute to the City of Markham's target of achieving a 30 per cent tree canopy in our community.

“By planting a tree and adding to our urban canopy, Markham residents are significantly contributing to creating a healthier, greener world now and for future generations,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Beyond farming lands, residential properties make up the largest area of land that can contribute to our urban canopy. Trees are essential as we work together to fight climate change, while keeping Markham beautiful."

Through LEAF's Backyard Tree Planting Program, Markham residents will only pay approximately $50-100 per tree on select species. Multi-unit and/or commercial properties may also qualify for this discount.

LEAF's Backyard Tree Planting Program provides residents with:

  • A 30-minute consultation with a LEAF arborist;
  • Full planting service, with a do-it-yourself option;
  • Tree care guide; and,
  • Follow-up tree care advice by email or phone

The selection of trees available are native to the area, which add to the natural biodiversity of our tree canopy. Native shrubs are also available.

"We're very excited to announce this new partnership and can't wait to start planting," says Janet McKay, Executive Director of LEAF. "Planting trees and shrubs not only helps our environment, but also provides shade and privacy while increasing property value."

Each property owner can qualify for up to five trees per property, space permitting. The approval process ensures your property can support the selected trees and shrubs.

Tree supply is limited and arborists book up early! Learn more and book your arborist consultation. Contact LEAF at www.yourleaf.org or call 1.866.453.6504.
