The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) outbreak has decimated the ash tree population throughout the GTA, including York Region. Once an ash tree is infected by the tiny insect, it will likely die within 3 years. To counter the damage done by the EAB, diverse species of trees need to be planted and cared for. This is where the LEAF community steps in.

This summer, I had the pleasure of returning to the beautiful Town of Newmarket to co-host an Edible Tree Tour with an incredible team of people. Together with local residents, we learned, laughed, told stories, and explored the town! Here are my three most memorable moments from that beautiful, sunny morning!

Growing up in suburban Mississauga, trees were not a primary interest of mine. As a teenager, I never had a particularly strong connection to trees or the outdoors, mostly because my neighbourhood was new and there weren’t many mature trees or parks I could ‘connect’ to.

Upon our first meeting, I knew there was something very special about Barbara! She was inquisitive about trees, supportive of all those around her, and eager to roll up her sleeves to get started! Barbara Anderson is this month’s Urban Forest Champion!

Did you know that many native bees are solitary? They don’t live in hives like honey bees. And native bees that hibernate through winter often do so in ground nests or in cracks and crevices. Most ground-nesting bees will burrow below the frost line in order to survive winter. Those that nest in twigs and wood crevices, fill their blood with anti-freeze-like substances to survive.
