The race is on! Starting October 5, participating schools in the York Catholic District School Board are competing to get trees and shrubs planted in their communities. In the spring, LEAF launched its Youth EAB Ambassador Program in eleven elementary schools; this fall, the program continues with new schools taking part in the contest.

A call to consciousness: to become conscious of life, the life that surprises you, the life you have to look around and inside of yourself to find; lift a leaf and you will find it!

The people that know me well know I love dogs and I love nature. I often combine these two loves, taking my dog, Bella, on walks and hikes through natural areas within Toronto and beyond the city. Generally speaking, I keep my dog on the trails and on her leash – here’s why.

I had a childhood filled with the urban forest. My daily interactions with our neighborhood trees were many and varied, and over the years my love of them has grown to a deeper understanding and appreciation.

Since the start of this summer, I have had the great opportunity to work with LEAF as a Young Urban Forest Leader alongside other youth who share a passion for caring for trees in the urban forest.

The red oak (Quercus rubra) is definitely in my top five favourite trees (it’s a very competitive list). It stands out in my mind as one of the most majestic and stately trees; it has a presence.

Where is a Greek tree nymph when you need one? I expect they are well versed in the tree species of Crete, and I could certainly have used one this summer!

I took LEAF’s Tree Tenders Training Program in the fall of 2008. After that training, I became co-leader of the Don Valley Brick Works stewardship team with the City of Toronto’s Community Stewardship program in the spring of 2009. This mostly involves naturalizing the wetland with the removal of invasive species and planting native ones in order to re-attract native wildlife that has otherwise disappeared from the city.

I'm guilty of this, and I don't think I'm alone: from time to time, I have the (very) bad habit of walking through the streets of my neighbourhood looking down at my phone, not truly appreciating my surroundings. On August 16th, I was joined by a group of over 60 people in Markham to spend a few hours in the hot, hot heat exploring our canopy and all the tasty treats up above. We spent two hours looking upward and discovered all the wonderful edibles in the community!
