The sun sets a little earlier, the temperature drops a little further, and the canopy of green that covers the city transforms into a blanket of colour. The city becomes a playground for fallen leaves; red, orange, and yellow confetti to celebrate the end of summer and the coming cooler season.

I went on a tree tour with LEAF three years ago, and it made me realize that I knew nothing about the trees around me. After that tour, I made a point of getting a tree identification guide and learning about the trees in my neighbourhood. Since then I have grown passionate about Toronto’s urban forest and have had the chance to lead a tree tour along with Marika MacLean and Theri Reichlin as part of LEAF’s Young Urban Forest Leaders program.

On a brilliantly sunny, early fall day, I ambled south along an empty, paved, mixed use path towards the lake. I could hear the roar of the breakers on Lake Ontario before I could see the golden glint off the surging waters beneath a huge weeping willow tree. I kept following the path that lined the shoreline until I arrived at a vast field where several exhibit stations were arrayed, the first of which, One Million Trees Mississauga, told me I had arrived.
