I’ve never been to Rio de Janeiro, but if I came across a genie in a bottle, visiting the city would be my first wish (I have dreams of strolling through Copacabana during Carnival). But much to my surprise, the city has more to offer than just beaches and hot weather. As a tree of beauty and versatility, the basswood has played both a symbolic and practical role throughout history. It has been called by a number of different names over the years such as the mystical tree of life, the tree of health, the judicial tree, the victory tree, the fertility tree and the social/dance tree. Its most notable nickname, however, is the bee tree.

On Earth Day this year, LEAF announced some very exciting news: that we were expanding our Backyard Tree Planting Program to Ajax. We’ve been so thrilled to offer this subsidized program to Ajax residents, but we’re not stopping there! With support from the Town of Ajax, Durham Region, Toronto and Region Conservation and Ontario Power Generation, we’ll also be offering some fantastic educational programs this fall.

The goal of The Great Toronto Tree Hunt was to engage Torontonians in helping us uncover the beauty and wonder of our urban forest by nominating individual trees that hold special meaning to them. We launched the Hunt on Earth Day, April 22nd, and by the close of our nomination period, June 1st, we had received 390 entries.
