I’m so excited to be back working at LEAF! It’s amazing to see how it has expanded over the past five years. You know a good organization by its ability to have long-term committed volunteers and staff, and LEAF has many. I’ve already seen familiar faces having been back only three weeks.

One of the first natural areas I visited when I started working with the City of Toronto 16 years ago was Glendon Forest. For many years, in my capacity as a Natural Environment Specialist with Parks, Forestry and Recreation, I planned and implemented ecological restoration projects in Toronto's Upper Don Watershed.

On May 2nd I had a huge treat: LEAF asked me to co-lead a Jane’s Walk to launch the Great Toronto Tree Hunt. When Janet McKay and I led a large crowd of keen tree-hunters through East York’s “Golden Triangle” neighbourhood, we found the treasures included people as well as trees.

Growing up in the concrete jungle that is Toronto, I realize just how lucky we are to have such a vast urban forest. When wandering through the vast system of ravines, you really start to forget that you’re in the middle of Canada’s largest city. We are lucky, both within and just outside of Toronto, to have a wonderful natural environment, one that we must preserve.

The One Million Trees Mississauga tree planting event on April 25, 2015 was already busily underway when I arrived. Three- foot-tall trees were being planted around the perimeter of a permanent vegetable garden and along Little Etobicoke Creek outside of Iceland Arena in Mississauga.

One of the most exciting parts about working at LEAF is when the opportunity arises to work on new projects, events and partnerships. For the past few months, I have been working on something that includes all three – and now I finally get to talk about it!
