Like it or not, the summer will soon be behind us and autumn will be in full swing. Now I know some of you may be wishing those warm summer days would never end and are dreading the arrival of winter. To you I say think of the non-humid sweater weather, the oranges and reds of fall, the apple cider and crisp fresh air. Can you tell autumn is my favorite time of year?

Now that the end of summer is sneaking up on us, our thoughts here at LEAF are turning to our fall planting season. And we all know what comes after fall… short days, long nights, cold, ice and snow! There’s no need to be any less excited about trees and shrubs as we go into Canada’s coldest season, however. While all trees and shrubs are attractive during the spring and summer --whether it’s thanks to their fragrant flowers, green leaves, or colourful berries -- there are many that have beautiful qualities during the winter as well!

Back in 2011, a private members motion to declare the Wednesday of National Forest Week “National Tree Day” received consent from the House of Commons. Since then, each September we take a day to reflect on how the trees in our communities improve our lives. This year, we’ll celebrate next Wednesday, September 24th.

Toronto has so many green spaces, but not all of them are big like High Park, the Humber or Don River valleys. Some are just small bits of green tucked away next to our subway stations. But everyday thousands of commuters pass by them and that little bit of green adds a peaceful ease to the surrounding urban environment.

On a Saturday morning in late August, a good group gathered outside of the Artscape Wychwood Barns for LEAF’s annual Edible Tree Tour. In the end, 90 people showed up! Robyn Stewart had the privilege of co-leading along with Becky Thomas of Not Far From the Tree, and Susan Poizner of Orchard People and the Ben Nobleman Community Orchard.
