Many of us hope to make some sort of positive difference in the world. After more than a year in the EAB trenches, here’s a list of what I learned trying to save ash trees…

These things go a very long way with newly planted trees. In our city parks, we see lots of new trees being planted every year. It’s wonderful - and necessary! But those first few years can be really challenging for our young park trees.

There’s no denying it – cities are better with trees. They clean our air, give us shade, offer privacy and buffer noise. They improve our quality of life and even increase our property values. But our trees have been under attack recently. Between insect invaders like Emerald Ash Borer and recent damage caused by the ice-storm, our urban trees are desperately in need of help.

In a windy storm last summer, Toronto saw the symbolic Maple Leaf Forever Tree fall to the street. So how can we ensure that the Maple Leaf lives forever?

Since I took LEAF’s Tree Tenders Volunteer Training Program two years ago, my life has literally been uprooted -- and, thankfully, is now being transplanted into better soil!

“It’s too windy. Let’s get the 10:40 ferry.” says Tyler Ganton in an early morning text. With winds at 45 km an hour the trees heave leeward and seem to approach their breaking point with every gust. This is a perfect example of the too-dangerous-to-climb-into-the-canopy-and-hang-from-the-branches type of conditions that I’ve become familiar with over this past year. As arborists, we have no choice but to wait to cross from the Toronto Island to the yards and trees that await us.

I started with LEAF back in 2008 as a volunteer. I can remember sitting down with Janet in the Bathurst Street office – an old converted warehouse filled with filing cabinets, old desks, pieces of wood and a modest team. There was Liza, the Volunteer Coordinator who was cool and organized. Todd with his great sense of humour and a personality that just made you want to be around him and learn as much as you could. They invited me out on a subzero night to attend their annual fundraiser and in the brightly lit Gladstone ballroom, I found a group that seemed to all be on the same page.
