Last week, I had the pleasure of attending Forests Ontario’s annual conference in Alliston. The theme was “One Forest”, and speakers focused on how we can work together to protect the health and prosperity of all of Ontario’s forests, regardless of whether they are found in urban, peri-urban, rural or remote areas.

Endangered animals are a big problem in the world. One of the endangered animals is the Barn owl. Barn owls are located in Southern Ontario. They are endangered because people are tearing down the old traditional barns and replacing them with new “bird proof” barns. Now these owls are losing suitable nesting sites and it affects their survival. This is a shame because with the old generation of barns, Barn owls actually helped farmers control the population of rats and mice in a natural way.

Hello friends of LEAF. As a new board member, I may be a new face to many of you but I plan to stick around in urban forestry for many years to come.

Last fall, I attended the Toronto Cancer Prevention Coalition’s symposium. What did I expect? Not what I received - which was enlightening.

Trees have a deep rooted connection to our past. They carry with them a rich history that helps define us as a society today. One tree in particular, the majestic sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), is uniquely significant and is considered a living relic of our cultural history.

I wonder how many Torontonians know the Norway maple is not a native species and is actually considered invasive? As a brand new board member at LEAF, this is one of the interesting new facts I have learned about our urban forest. As a resident of Toronto and a member of the environmental non-profit community in my ‘day job’, I have a great appreciation for the work LEAF does in our city.

We are all familiar with the term “multi-purpose”, often used in conjunction with a product or item that can be used in multiple ways for many different outcomes. We are all guilty of trying to tackle more than one thing at once to try and save time and money. So if multiuse products are so great, why not plant a multiuse tree?
